We’ve got you covered, Lake County

“Lake County Masks” is more imperative verb than proclamation. I mask, you mask, we mask, Lake County Masks. Throw in the exclamation point, like the musical Oklahoma!, and you end up with Lake County Masks! It’s an idea, a call to action, a meme, a movement … or simply a reminder that Covid-19 is still out there.

Mask up, people. It’s the right thing to do. It’s also part of Lake County’s public health order.

Getting Lake County residents and visitors to mask up is easier said than done. Some business owners aren’t big fans of masks, or they don’t like trying to “police” their customers. A small but vocal minority of county residents have attempted to turn masking into a political issue. Which is ironic, to say the least, because reopening relies on social distancing — including the use of facial coverings in businesses and public places.

That’s where this website comes in. Lake County Masks is the hybrid offspring of the Lake County CA Coronavirus public Facebook page and the (M)asking for a Friend private Facebook group. As explained on the About page, one of the primary goals of Lake County Masks is to promote compliant businesses and institutions, not get dragged into the name-and-shame game. With that said, we also provide peer reviews in our business directory to help people identify and avoid potential problem spots. Peer pressure and social media can be among the most effective self-enforcement tools for communities of interest, which is important when formal enforcement tools are lacking.

This website is not ready for prime time, but many of its building blocks are in place and ready to rock. If you’re a business owner or a big fan of a compliant business, Add a Listing in just a few minutes, then add a review of the place specific to your Covid-19 concerns. Five stars is good, no stars is bad, just like peer reviews on other platforms. While peer reviews are hardly perfect, they are useful for spotting trends over time. Any business or customer can have a bad hair day, but we want to highlight their successes just as much as the failures.

In future days, I hope to have a better handle on the website and some news about our logo design contest. Want to see a feature added or changed? Use the contact page.

In the meantime, let that exclamation point do its job. Lake County Masks! That’s good! Keep it up!!
